Unfortunately, there is one drawback to the weirdness. I appreciate all things peculiar, and the game is more than willing to pay strangeness in spades. There is no shortage of creativity here, though some might feel that the strange and sometimes eerie phenomena you bump into come off as "weird for weird's sake." Honestly, I have no problem with that. Afterward, you'll need to procure a hen trapped in an overstuffed igloo, create another by blowing on a certain combination of wall-mounted trumpets that generate new life forms, plus hatch one from an egg by taking it to a Frankenstein-ish laboratory. You can then snatch a fowl out of the resultant trip, which is displayed above the meditator. In order to nab all of the birds, you have to engage in some rather odd scenes, including one where you click on various bulbs to make a meditating plant-man hallucinate. You need these avians because a seed-person requires them to activate the village's transport system, which includes fourteen hamster wheels for the fowl to run on that harvest their kinetic energy and use it to propel the entire burg into the sky. For instance, one segment requires you to search a village and recover fourteen chicken-like birds. You see, Botanicula is a weird title with strange objectives. I know that last sentence sounds dry and technical, but that's the best way I can describe the game without going into graphic, sanity-destroying detail. You accomplish this by observing the game's peculiar environment, clicking on various objects and hoping that you're doing it all in the correct sequence. This graphic adventure revolves around a quintet of sentient, botanical beings who attempt to take back their home, a massive tree, from a swarm of spider-like parasites. "I'm so not doing this game any justice."īotanicula is not a good conversation starter if you're socially awkward, like me. Uh, something about the spiders sucking the life out of the tree, which is like a home for the.

So I finished the main quest and put the game down but after a week I felt the need to return and do the side quests. As I was playing the main quest I found no motivation to stop and do silly riddles while Batman/Gotham was on the verge of death/collapse, it just didn't make any sense to me. My big gripe with the game is that the story isn't written in a way to encourage exploration since Batman is always on a literal timer in the story (not mechanically but narratively). The mechanics are there though, this is just my experience of the level design. Compared to Asylum, City's dungeons are more focused on complex ways of traversal with gadgets and then rooms with brawls, than the methodical hunting Batman does in Asylum. The open world also doesn't feel designed with stealth in mind but this is also somewhat true for the dungeons. But I think Asylums level design was better at encouraging stealth while City favored brawls a bit more. It feels just as great as in Asylum to quickly jump down, take someone out and then disappear leaving the rest scared. I also love the fact that the stealth gameplay isn't slow. Otherwise, the combat is extremely fluid and responsive. Then he needs 5 seconds where he can't interrupt what he's doing. It's like Batman has the reflexes of a bat except when he's in the middle of finishing someone off. The only thing that annoyed me was not being able to cancel takeout animations if someone is attacking me. When it comes to combat it's basically an improved version of the one in Asylum, which is great. In Arkham City, you spend the majority in the open world (at least if you do the side quests). Sure the hub had some collectibles, secrets and fights, but you spent the absolute majority of the time in the different interior levels. This is the main difference in design compared to Asylum, which was more of a metriodvania where the exteriors functioned as a hub. The world isn't very big but it basically functions as an open world with side quests and collectibles while the main quest sends Batman around the map to explore the interior "dungeons". Arkham City is a gated-off part of Gotham that was made into a maximum security prison (basically like Manhattan in Escape from New York). It takes the same gameplay and applies it to a new story set in a more open setting. Arkham City Overall a fantastic sequel to Arkham Asylum. Overall a fantastic sequel to Arkham Asylum. To me it is between this, battlefield 3 (the MP is sooooo solid), The Witcher 2 and Skyrim. I can't find any fault with this game other than the DX11 problem, and that will be fixed, so a solid 10/10 and this game leaves me wondering what will be GOTY. But most all of the voice acting done here is awesome. The sound is awesome, including the voice acting, The Joker is especially, like last game, really good. The graphics are gorgeous beyond belief, even in DX9 it looks good, I can also run at almost max with max PhysX on my GTX460, only thing I have turned down is AA at 16x. I have had no troubles whatsoever, and the troubles I did have came from me not being used to the combat system, not because it was bad. As stated earlier this games combat is awesome, and works even better on mouse and keyboard than its predecessor. Until that patch there are lots of goodies to play meanwhile, like Skyrim and Battlefield 3. So, if your that angered by it, wait before you buy it, or if you already bought it, don't play until the patch is out. The DX11 thing is something that they already are aware of, and they will fix it. Can't do much about GFWL and SecuRom, they don't make the game worse, they are just bad choiced to safeguard against people playing without paying. Still the story keeps me intrigued, the combat is insanely good, and the atmosphere is amazing. However, none of that really matters, a month later? Who fricking cares, yes I had some of it spoiled, but I should have kept away from the batman forums to be sure. Yes the game was a month late, yes DX11 features will slow down your game, when it should, in fact, speed it up, yes there is SecuRom, and yes its on GWFL. Yes the game was a month late, yes DX11 features will slow I can't believe people voting this a 0, but I guess there are haters everywhere. I can't believe people voting this a 0, but I guess there are haters everywhere. Although, it must be said that just a few AI aircraft might be sufficient, because they are very active. At the moment, using the max number of 19 AI aircraft has too big a toll on performance, even on my Ryzen 5600X, and even using optimized AI models. In some cases, looking at them afar from the (virtual) tower, I felt like it could be mistaken for a real video.Īnd the sounds, oh my God! Not only the spooling up and down of the turbofans, but the loud noise of the turboprops (which are actually even louder from a distance than turbofans, as in real life) and the transition to the even louder sound of propellers reversing on the landing rollout!Īnd of course, in addition to all of that, the new background noises of the airport environment, added by Daniella in XP12.Īs I said, they still need to improve many things though. Watching them turning the landing lights on as they enter the active runway and then spool up the engines is so satisfying. The most dramatic effect is in lowish visibility, where XP12 probably has the most realistic lighting of all sims. And as the aircraft roll out, you can see the landing gear suspension working on the asphalt irregularities. The big airliners slowly rock and sway, but the smaller GA planes are more affected and unstable, just as in RL. I set up some gusting crosswind + turbulence, and looking at them crabbing and landing is like watching a real planespotting video. The movements are incredibly smooth and realistic, both on the ground and in the air. What is incredible is the physics of the AI aircraft. IMO it's the sim that can provide the most immersion for that. In the last few days I've spent hours just enjoying planespotting in XP12. Players will select and equip a weapon, and as they hack-and-slash their way through enemies, finding crafting recipes for magic zines, gifts, and clothing, they gather experience points. Outside of the dating sim component, the other purpose of gameplay is exploring the dunj. Boyfriend Dungeon has a variety of uncomfortable subject matter, but this one may be the most alarming, so know that before booting up the game. H is advances are very realistic, unbearable, but important to building the overarching narrative due to his relation to characters other than the player. Given he is a core part of the story, and a stalker, Eric’s presence can only be ignored for so long before the player must engage with him. The game is not entirely without flaws, as the character of Eric has the potential to make players uncomfortable. The best kind of dates involve stabbing roaches! This formula of dungeon running and dating is incredibly addictive and Kitfox’s writing has a sharpness that makes the player come back for more. As players run through the dunjs and level up their weapons, they are offered dates and, through these interactions, are rewarded with countless stories of people who want to better themselves but struggle with how. From Isaac’s uncomfortable relationship with his father and his desire to help others, to K-pop star Seven’s fight with depression and stardom, each character’s story makes the player want to learn more about them. Each of the weapons has a wonderful and compelling story that keeps the player on a string of flings, eager to explore their companion’s storyline. While the main story of Boyfriend Dungeon is fairly simplistic, it’s the dates that truly steal the show. They also meet Eric, a man who is not all he seems and is pursuing the protagonist for a one-sided relationship, despite constant rejection. While exploring the Verona Mall, the player meets lost sentient weapons who have had pieces of them removed. Jesse, the player’s cousin, says that Verona Beach is a place for romance and that dating should be a priority while in town. Our main character moves to Verona Beach for the summer and takes a job as a monster slayer who plunders dunjs. While it’s not everything I envisioned, it’s a solid experience from start to finish. I’ve been waiting for this game to release since the Kickstarter happened back in 2018, so to finally have it on my Nintendo Switch is pretty exciting. While this sounds utterly insane, Kitfox Games’ Boyfriend Dungeon has a lot of charm, from calling dungeons “dunjs”, to make the runs all the more fun when you’re flirting with a cutie and cutting living martini glasses down to size. I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would be playing an RPG where I date my weapons. The top-left group could go to either cell. It looks like the two groups of three on the right could merge or not. Hexcells is the best puzzle game ever made.If I've figured out how Cronnit works, this post should automatically go up at 7:07 AM (Texas time) on February 19, 2021, the 7th anniversary of the day the original Hexcells game was released on Steam! I thought the occasion deserved a celebration. Is a thing I’ve said before, and maintain. In a far larger scale than even that implies. Hexcells – and by the name I mean all three games in the trilogy as one super-game, like a Transformer of puzzling perfection – is not only the best puzzle game on sale, but it’s the best puzzle. It’s better than Slitherlink, Killer Sudoku, Picross… Oh gosh do I really mean that? Yes! I really do. I mean, you might wrongly disagree with your wrong mind. “Personal taste” you might wrongly argue. “But you can’t play these on paper,” your wrong mouth might wrong out loud. Because Hexcells is the best puzzle ever. The goal of any Hexcells puzzle is to correctly identify all the hexes that should be shaded blue, and to click-to-delete all the rest. A sort of combination of a nonogram and Minesweeper (although I deeply loathe the comparison with the latter, since it’s such an obnoxiously terrible puzzle), each of the three sets of 36 puzzles grew increasingly complex and involved. There’s never any guessing, always a fair and logical route to the next click, with these hand-crafted puzzles designed with wit, almost an authorial narrative, as you unpick their fiendish path. And that would have been enough, but then they’re presented in a clean, crisp minimalist fashion with joy-inducing ambient music into which you play soothing notes as you solve. Not content with already having made the best puzzle game ever featuring the best puzzles ever, crazed genius creator Matthew Brown has just given the six-year-old trilogy a new coat of paint, tidied things up, and most importantly of all, stopped Hexcells Plus from artificially delaying how your clicks became part of the soundtrack. I know that last point sounds flippant, but it took something away, made your clicks feel less a part of the poetry. Now all is sublime, made even more approachable and appreciable thanks to the inclusion of a Dark Mode. I’ve brute-forced one into the WordPress CMS in which I’m typing these very words. And also see every screenshot accompanying this post.įurther, everything is crisped up, slightly prettier, and joy of joys, it has sensible in-game options at long, long last. You can now in-game switch over the mouse button settings! Hooray! And the last mad oddity of before is gone: the puzzle numbers now match the ones in the menus. I play all three through at least twice a year, and each time get stuck on exactly the same puzzles in exactly the same places. You’d think I’d eventually learn, but nope. Although I’m unquestionably good at these games now! I can finish the first, Hexcells Prime as it should have been renamed, in about 25 minutes, no mistakes. Yes, you can touch the hem of my garment. Plus takes a couple of hours because it’s lots harder! Infinite many more, because they’re flipping corkers, and I adore them and want to kiss them and marry them and die with them on our own private island. I have to admit to being disappointed Brown didn’t create a few more levels after all these years. Although I do rather hope his restored interest in tweaking such joyous puzzles (rather than completely impenetrable games for space-geniuses) might suggest he has something up his sleeve. If you have the games already, they’ll have updated for you now. If you’ve not, then I hope I’ve made it reasonably clear that these are worth getting. The best thing you could do for yourself is pick up all five of Brown’s logic puzzle games in one go, because they’re all amazing, and you can get the lot for less than £10. Or you can get all three Hexcells games for £6 (a couple of quid cheaper than buying them all separately).ĭespite having played them so very many times, for so very many years, they still evoke a state of bliss for me. The combination of such perfect designs plus the soothing, elevating ambient tunes, is my happy place. I think it could be yours too.Īll Buried Treasure articles are funded by Patreon backers. If you want to see more reviews of great indie games, please consider backing this project. John, seeing as you didn’t mention them above, it seems there’s at least a passing chance you’ve not explored the user levels from the hexcellslevels subreddit, now browsable via the game as Aaron mentioned above. ^ Die ganze Musik im Internet: Charts, News, Neuerscheinungen, Tickets, Genres, Genresuche, Genrelexikon, Künstler-Suche, Musik-Suche, Track-Suche, Ticket-Suche.
